WE ARE A PARTNERSHIP FOR GROWTH

Creative

Whilst David Attenborough documentaries or Wallace and Gromit may be world-renowned, our creative sector is diverse, modern, high-quality and widely distributed.

It's not always visible, but it is potent.

Key West of England facts

  • 15,900 jobs
  • £0.66 billion GVA
  • 106% growth in productivity since 1999
  • World leading BAFTA and Oscar winning expertise in factual TV and features, animation and print and digital publishing
  • Bristol and Bath are recognised by NESTA as two of nine hot spots for creative industries outside of London
  • Encounters Short Film Festival – one of four key film festivals in the UK with the BFI

Sector overview

The LEP area is established as one of the 3 key centres in England alongside London and Manchester, providing regional bases for Creative England and Creative Skillset, and with Bristol and Bath noted as 2 of the 9 key UK creative centres outside London by the NESTA report Creative Clusters and Innovation.

Creative Industries production is increasing, with a national workforce that is over 5% of the total, and a contribution of over 3% of total UK GVA.

The South West region is the 4th largest in England behind London, the South East and East (the London hinterland) and outperforms the North West region.

Research by the Work Foundation shows the strength of the sector in the LEP area following closely on the Financial Services sector :

Together, Bristol and Bath have world-leading expertise in factual TV, animation and publishing. A key aim now is to link the Creative and High-tech sectors more closely, to produce a unique opportunity in working in the complete technology "stack" from silicon design to user experience.

The Creative and technology sectors are vital to the development of the LEP Enterprise Zone in Bristol Temple Quarter.

We have great sector organisations in Bristol Media, Creative Bath and the West of England Design Forum.

We reflect a national picture, with strong GVA performance

and international impact
